Speaking of the 10th District and all things new media, I was on the panel for this month’s GA Politics Podcast. Here’s the audio from that:
I think the discussion was great in this episode, much more conversational than it’s often been. It was recorded at our place just by setting our portable recorder down on the coffee table (as was the newest episode of North Fulton Drama Club). It got me thinking about how to set up for audio recording in our new place.
I want to run with the sitting around the coffee table, forget-the-mic-is-there set-up. I think we can do this with one or two boundary microphones, plugged straight into the recorder or through a USB interface into a laptop. This would be less complicated and expensive than lapel mics, and I’m kind of over the novelty of having an imposing-looking sound set-up if it’s going to be a lot of effort to deal with. I’m eying the Shure MX393. Anyone have any experience with this microphone or any others in the Microflex series they can share?
There are very obvious issues with echoes and noise in the new place. Some of that will be worked out when we install curtains sometime in the next few weeks, and I’m also planning to buy and/or make some portable freestanding noise-absorption panels and bass traps at some point pretty soon.
We toyed with the idea of making our vault into a studio, but that isn’t going to work, at least not as a place for frequent recordings. There’s not enough ventilation. The sound isolation is better there, so it may yet still be used as a place for voiceover-type stuff (ideal when making fake commercials).
But, the point is, I had a hell of a lot of fun not having to play sound engineer this time out. Thanks to Joseph, his panelists, the NFDC crew, and everyone else for making our first party in three or four months awesome.
UPDATE: Courtesy of SpaceyG, it’s the pale white guys’ legs show!
Five minutes worth of it anyway. We were one ethernet cable away from a live broadcast over uStream. Month-after-next we’re hoping to give it another shot.

I take issue with Randy Lewis’s continued insistence that Republicans know exactly how to turn out their voters blah blah blah.
If so, why are Jim Marshall and John Barrow still in Congress after the Republicans in the state not only redistricted but drew districts specifically with their opponents in mind.
Additionally, Democrats win a lot of house and senate districts where Perdue/Bush got over 60%, yet Republicans only hold 1 district in the entire state where Kerry won.
Finally, if I had to guess I would say that 2/3 of Georgia’s school boards, county commissions etc are still controlled by Democrats. If anything, the Republicans started having more success in this state in the last couple of years when they stopped trying to upset the local establishment’s apple cart and told Democratic sheriffs (for example) ‘you can stay a Democrat but you should endorse Sonny’ or insert local state house Republican candidate.
If you go back to 1984 and ‘88 Reagan and Bush were winning by huge margins in this state. What happened? The state political scene was slowly aligning to the national trends that had been going on since the 1960’s. Winning is the best recipe for future wins and the Dems were able to stall the alignment for a long time, but what you’re seeing now is an accelerated catching up (since 2002) because a lot of the change that was really going on under the surface over the last 20 years could really only happen once the Dems finally lost.
Take someone like Chuck Sims as a good example. He was a Democratic representative running unopposed in a rural district where Bush got 70% of the vote. His constituents were happy sending a conservative to the legislature who was in the same party as the Governor and bring home the bacon.
Very quickly when the status quo changed he adapted as well, then he blew out his Democratic opponent in 2006 by an insane margin. Does Randy Lewis actually think a voterfile (or the lack of a good one on the Democratic side) is to blame for all of this happening?
Ain’t you got no girls in your club?
tribalecho,
Grayson was on the panel and also operating the camera. Joseph usually has at least one or two of teh ladies on there, but it couldn’t hurt to have more.
Also, Catherine was supposed to come but had to cancel at the last minute.
MORE GIRLS! LESS REDNECK! wait a minute…
Bring on the girls. AND bring on the necks of Red.
Holy Cow. I’ve been wondering what to call my first blog. Necks of Red? I’m not from the south but I certainly get pissed when all ya’ll get stereo-typed. No. But someone should use it.
I was there. And next time I’m there, I pledge to make clothing optional. Lordy knows the men folk were all in a twitter over how they looked on camera. Would hate to hear the chatter in their locker rooms.
I don’t think making clothing optional will help matters, unless you put more girls on the panel.
Who’s to say there aren’t women out there interested in politics and also interested in gazing at nekkid men?
Oh, I think there are. But we’ve seen the white legs already…let’s just say I don’t think more whiteness would necessarily be an improvement.
Bwahahaha.
