Now things are getting interesting.
UPDATE: That was fun while it lasted. Kerry had himself, Ted Kennedy, and… and… that’s about it (login) on board for a fillibuster. Doh. Alito’s record indicates he is extremely friendly to Republican positions (I won’t call him “conservative” because Republican positions aren’t conservative at all these days), but there’s nothing to indicate he isn’t qualified for the job. I think it’s pretty amazing that Harry Reid even managed a strict party line vote in committee.

“Qualified for the job” and “should be a Supreme” are two different things. He’s way too clearly in favor of excessive executive power for my taste. That, and I don’t like replacing Sandra Day with an old(ish) white dude when there are plenty of equally-as-qualified women and minorities.
Nikki,
I agree with you and Eponymous that Alito’s preference toward allowing excessive executive power are very scary. But a filibuster isn’t going to accomplish anything at this point other than to give the GOP ammunition in mid-term elections. If Dems were going to do it, they should have done it before two or three Dems said they’d vote for the dude.
I have no confidence in the Democratic Party right now, and no intention of voting for Republicans for the foreseeable future. It would all be very depressing if I spent much time thinking about it.
All I have to say is… score one for the good guys.
About time the foolishness of what is Senate Dems realize just how idiotic they are.
And just for the record all the people that are “anti Alito” now voted for him unanimously the first time he came up as a Federal Appeals Court judge. If they liked him then… Why not now? Hmmmm… I wonder… Maybe because they are so scared to think that a president they “feel is so dumb” once again beats them good on another debate. Brings a tear of joy to my eyes.
Jeffrey, re:
A Supreme Court appointment is just a wee bit more important than a Federal Appeals Court judgeship, wouldn’t you say? I don’t see any conflict with letting him slide earlier and opposing him now, given the importance of the position and increased scrutiny that comes with it.
Given that Biden, Reid and others said they wouldn’t filibuster Alito, this strikes me as Kerry acting almost alone, not as something Senate Dems did as a group. I don’t think much more of Kerry than you do these days.
Don’t forget Kennedy, he was a part of it too. Is it just me or could it be something in the water in Massachusettes.
Way to defend your point against Rusty’s rebuttal.
